Episode #59 – The Problem of Pain: Human Suffering

Transcript:

Everyone, welcome back to another podcast. If you’re here for the first time, welcome back. Today’s topic is always something to do with pain. On my channel, I talk about prospering body, spirit, and soul, and going through our human suffering, triggers, childhood trauma. And I’ve been reading this book lately by C.S. Lewis. He is one of my favorite authors of all time because his work is about theology and he talks about the conditions of our heart. I’m going to read some of the things he wrote in this specific book, The Problem of Pain. He talks about I’m going to read it to you.

It says, “Before proceeding, I must pick up a point made in chapter 2. I there said that pain below a certain level of intensity was not presented and might even be rather light. Perhaps you then wanted to reply, in that case, I would not call it pain.” And you may have been right. But the truth is that the word pain has two senses or have two senses must now be distinguished. A particular kind of sensation probably conveyed by specialized nerve fibers and recognizable by the patient as that kind of sensation whether he dislike it or not and be an experience whether physical or mental which the patient dislikes. It will be noticed that all pains in a sense become pains in sense B if they are raised and above a certain very low level of intensity. But that pains in the B sense need not be pains in the A sense. Pain is what you call synonymous as suffering, anguish, tribulation, adversity, or trouble.” – C.S. Lewis

The Problem With Human Pain & Its Purpose

Let’s just stop there. So pain is a sensation. It is this feeling of uncomfortable tingly sensation especially when it’s physical. This is why many people hate pain and our natural our tendency is to go towards our cabinet medicine and grab something to ease our pain to alleviate any kind of suffering because we do not like pain. However, if you are living in this world, you know that even Jesus profoundly said it that in this life you will have trials, you will have tribulation. You and I will go through challenges in life because that’s just part of life.

1. Uncomfortable

So the problem with human pain is that it’s uncomfortable. You will feel discomfort and you are not going to feel at ease unless you deal with the root cause. We, as humans usually love pain free. We don’t want any suffering at all because it’s in our nature that we want something easy, comfort, and we’re just going to sit idly and not endure pain. However, as much as I would like to say that pain is not good. But pain usually is a lesson to be learned. With anything in life without suffering, you are not going to be able to understand that there is healing. If you have not suffered before, you don’t know what healing looks like. You’re not going to understand without the kind of discomfort that you feel in your body. You would not know the difference between comfort because life is part of contradictions.

The Truth: If there’s negative, there’s also positive. When there is darkness, there is light. If you might ask yourself the question, if God is a loving God, why does he allow me to suffer? Like every one of us, like when I was also going through suffering in my life, I also asked the same question. If God is truly love, why did he not spare me from being abused? Why did he allow me to go through sexual abuse, mentally, verbally, and sexually abuse if God is love? It is the one of the most common questions that humans have even to this day.

2. Purpose for Pain

The Reason: The problem is that we only have this idea that God is going to protect us. God can allow things to happen even though he can prevent us from experiencing pain, but he allows us to experience them. According to Romans 8:28, all things work together for good to those whom God called for his purpose and for his glory. If you don’t understand that by now, maybe let it marinate and contemplate and think about what that verse means. God is not after our comfort. Usually he’s not after our own happiness. Unfortunately, we live in a world that only glorify happiness. It’s all about the blue skies. Without the rain, you would not have soil that is tenderized or soil that is going to be planted because it’s going to be arid. It’s going to be so dry. So you need turbulence in your life in order for you to experience and to really know what happiness is and what healing looks like.

Contrast: It is the juxtaposition of life that there’s going to be highs and there’s going to be lows. There’s going to be bad days and there’s going to be good days in life. And when you know how to endure throughout the trials and you don’t give up and you just believe that God will work things out for good. When you study the book of Job, he was the man that told to be a friend of God. I think I would like to say that if you think that God is going to spare you from any hardships just because you become a Christian or because you’re someone special, you’re absolutely wrong.

3. Fallen World

The Reason: Because in this life, we live in a fallen world. We have opened the floodgates of hell way back in the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve violated the very rule that God said, “Thou shalt not touch the tree of good and evil. Then they touch it and they ate of it. That’s why today we’re still suffering. That is why when Satan said to Jesus, they are given me the keys. Due to their disobedience therefore we are paying for the consequences. We have decided, well, Adam and Eve decided to take the matters on their own. And that’s why we are no longer protected under the umbrella of God and said, “Okay, you’re on your own because you have violated the rule.” God’s plan was not for us to suffer. His plan was for us to just like animals without consciousness. That was the first plan.

The Purpose: We were supposed to just animals eating around doing nothing and cultivate a little bit of here and there in the Garden of Eden just like the animals they had after they have eaten. and then they’re just going to sit idly. However, the moment that Adam and Eve violated that rule, we’re no longer under the protection of God. That’s why God said, “You’re on your own.” And that’s why until the day you die, you’re going to suffer. You’re going to have trials. You’re going to have this ongoing moaning and groaning deep within your soul.

The same thing with Job when he suffered when Satan made a deal with God and says, “I want to test Job. I want to be able to test his character to see truly if he is one of your people.” And we think that you and I are not being negotiated by God. There’s a discussion that is going on all the time. Whether we admit it or not, there is a force that is dealing with our heart. And that’s exactly what God said to Satan. He is the accuser of the brethren.

That’s why when you look at suffering, you usually have this idea in your head that you need to get rid of it. But with suffering though, when you are faithful enough to stick through it and remember that whatever the devil meant to harm you, God is going to turn it around for good.

When Satan said the only reason that Job loves you is because you are protecting him, that’s because he loves you is because you put angels around him. What if you take away his family or his friends or what if you take away his wealth? Because as I said before, I think I talked about this that there are three things that we’re going to be tested.

Our faith will be tested through family members, through friendships. Our faith will be tested through wealth of how much you have and what if God’s gonna take it all away. Are you still going to be faithful? Are you still going to serve God when God takes everything away from you? Then thirdly, the last test that Job had to go through was his health. So you’ll be tested with relationships, your wealth, and your health.

So this is the parameter and the gauge whether you truly love God when you don’t when you have nothing left at all. And is very hard to grasp the concept because not everybody is able to endure the pain because we as a human being like comfort. We don’t like discomfort. We like ease. We like conveniences. We like fast quick and rapid results. And that’s why it usually leads to a person who is apathetic in life and lethargic. With anything in life, it has to go through stages. You came from your mother’s womb before you become an adult.

You have to learn how to walk, to talk, you have to dress on your own. And so suffering is the same thing. There are stages of healing. You cannot just healed instantly.

We don’t like discomfort. We like ease. We like conveniences. We like fast quick and rapid results. And that’s why it usually leads to a person who is apathetic in life and lethargic.
As humans, we usually love pain free. We don’t want any suffering at all because it’s in our nature that we want something easy, comfort, and we’re just going to sit idly and not endure pain.

It’s all about progression. You must heal first of all from the awareness that you have been violated. It’s the first thing: acknowledgment that you are been broken and wounded and somebody hurt you.

And secondly, of course, it’s about the confession and learning that it’s okay that you have been through a lot of things in this life, but you cannot allow your suffering to stagnate you. You cannot allow pain to make you bitter. It’s easier said than done, of course, because many people are crippled or debilitated by the idea that you have no idea what I’ve been through. You probably is going to convince me otherwise that what was done to me was very hard and it’s something that I cannot get over with because that’s why it’s very hard to break a certain pattern because sometimes our pain can define you and it will make you who you are.

It will entrench something in your psyche, but it doesn’t have to be. You need to really force yourself to believe that there’s always going to be a light at the end of the tunnel. When Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.” And you have to really endure. You have to really understand that when Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly,” he meant it. He didn’t say that casually. when he said that I have come that you will have resurrection and the life.

I really think that without the source of God through his son Jesus Christ because he said I am the vine and you are the branches. Apart from me you cannot do anything. That’s the only time for you to really heal. There are a lot of self-help books out there. I have read them before. There are so many gurus out there is going to tell you about certain things that you have to do to be healed. But I always like to say that the moment I have read the Bible and I truly grasp the concept when Jesus said you must abide in me in order for you to bear fruit apart from the vine. You’re just cut off out of the sources.

Connecting with nature to hear God’s voice

As if you’re a human being that needs to have the oxygen from the one who created you. Just like a baby that is being developed inside a mother’s womb, a fetus, and she is connected with a placenta. I don’t really know the nuances or the scientifically uh terminology, but this is something that I can think of without the oxygen or that cord connected to the mother’s belly into the fetus or the infant that is still uh incubating inside the mother’s womb that cannot be sustained.

The same thing with us. Without you being attached to the vine, you cannot possibly heal completely. You cannot possibly know who you are in God. To be able to understand your true identity, you must understand who created you and what made you unique and why God allows suffering. In every suffering in life, whether you might agree with me or not, there’s there is a purpose. There’s always a purpose to your pain. There’s always a calling that God is using so that he can use that to advance his kingdom. As I said, God is not after only your comfort. He’s not only after your happiness in life. When you think that life is only about happiness and comfort, then you’re never going to grow.

Many people that’s why they’re not growing because they have never been they have never endured pain. Have you not noticed that the most people that have been through pain, they are the most empathetic? They are the most sympathetic people in the world. They are the most generous and kind. I am not trying to chew my horn here. But I am giving an example that those people who have endured mistreatment, they are the most kind and they are the most sympathetic or empathetic people because they know what it feels like to suffer.

They can understand a human condition because they have walked in that shoes. They can understand you better because they know what it feels like when they have been sexually abused or abandoned or neglected. But to those people who have not suffered, I’m not saying that I promote suffering. I’m not saying that suffering is good because suffering truly can change your mindset. When you suffer, you are not the same anymore. There is something that changes or flip a switch in your mind that is going to change the trajectory of your belief system and how you see life and even how you see the world.

But you can differentiate between people who have not suffered. People have not suffered, they usually entitled. They usually are ungrateful. They’re most likely complaining about the little things in life. They’re most likely are spoiled because they don’t know what suffering looks like.

On the other hand, if you have been through hardships and you have been able to endure it and get out of that victimhood mindset and you become now a different version of yourself, then you can understand the depth of human condition that now you can hold some space for people. you allow them to be who they are and not change them because healing also is about discovering that you are actually stronger than you think. Healing is a part where you say if I’m able to endure this I know that I can face whatever storm that I will be facing in the future. suffering also is going to help you build your character that produces hope that produces your perseverance that produces your stamina to keep going no matter how hard it is.

Life has its meaning and beauty when given it time, you will discover it eventually.

And I did not read a book by Victor Frankl, but I think it’s the meaning of life that I’ve heard many people talk about it when he was imprisoned during the Nazis regime that he actually was the person who got out of that imprisonment during the camp because he had a different mindset. He did not play the victim of being imprisoned. He actually was being productive even though he was suffering too alongside with other people. But because he had this idea that in order for me to survive even though I’m suffering, I’m going to make use of my time here. I’m not going to use this. So do not use a good crisis. According to I think it was Hillary Clinton who said that never waste a good crisis.

The Meaning of Life

So whatever crisis that you’re facing today, you can actually use it to either make you a better version of yourself or you can stay stagnant and be bitter and make excuses of the things that has done for you.

  • If I probably did not have faith and believe that God is going to get me through it, I probably would not be here today.
  • And that is a fact because many people who have endured so much pain, the easiest route is to give up and to quit.

Recent News

And I really don’t want to tackle into this, but we just saw because I’m a Filipino woman, Atienza. I really don’t know who she was until it was on the news that she’s taken over her life. She’s one of the Tik Tockers. She was 19 years old.

And it is sad to see that on the outside we think we thought that she’s happy and living a good life and then now we heard that she actually taken her life. And I don’t really don’t want to get into it but that’s why as I said many people will paint a picture at a different picture on the outside making you believe that they have it all figured out that they’re living that kind of life but you have no idea the kind of demons that they’re dealing with.

Inside Out

They’re only showing you a part of themselves, smiling on the outside and being happy and you thought that their life is wonderful, but you don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. That is why it’s important that the more you are honest with yourself and really deal with the nitty-gritty of your issues, whether it’s from your mother wound issue, your father wound, whatever it is that you have been through, it is better for you to just slowly acknowledge that you have been broken and you need to be wounded. Because I told you, I’ve been that. I’ve been there too. I used to be that kind of a person when I was in my teenage years. I was clubbing, drinking, hanging out on the weekends. I was patching things up. I was very busy going to school, working at the same time because I did not want to look at myself in the mirror. I didn’t want to acknowledge that I was broken.

Facing Your Past

I was so good at keeping myself busy because I was hiding from my pain. I was running away from my pain. And when you run away from your pain, it is going to haunt you for the rest of your life. I don’t care what you say. That’s why many people go through substance abuse. Many people have addictions. Many people have many things that they try to distract themselves because it is too uncomfortable to look at their pain. But if you’re not going to acknowledge and look at your pain, it will eventually have its ugly way of manifesting. It will haunt you for the rest of your life. You need to take care of the skeletons that have been hiding in your closet.

4. The Matter of the Heart

You need to deal with your heart. That’s why the Bible says the heart is deceitful. And to guard your heart with all diligence for because the issues of life comes from the inner man. It is the between the soul. It is between your intellect and your emotion. That’s where your soul is. It is seated between your mind and your heart. Whatever your heart is thinking and pondering and whatever your heart has been just dormant for the rest of your life there and you’re just pretending like it’s not there, it will eventually come out.

The Reason: That’s why you have lack of accountability. That’s why you are selfish. That’s why you are jealous. You’re prideful. You lie constantly because these these have root causes. You wonder why people sometimes are angry.

5. Locate The Root Cause

Triggers: You wonder why they just blow up out of no apparent reason. No wonder why they are very impatient. These are the results of something that they have been suppressing forever and they they don’t want to dig something that says where did this come from? You did not wake up one day and become bitter or angry. There is a root cause of every actions. There’s a root cause of every attitudes that you’re doing right now. But because you’re too cowardly and you don’t want to look at the ugliness of your pain, that’s why majority of people would rather want to hide, medicate, or overindulge or have an addiction because they refuse to become transparent and own up to their pain.

Manifestation: That is why it’s important that when Jesus said you will know them by their fruit, it it talks about the spiritual matter of the person. You don’t even have to go to a church to really understand who are the people that you’re dealing with. When I was very snappy before in my younger years, impulsive, I was overly reactive. I was very impatient. until now I need to understand why I I do the things that I do. When I took the time to understand it was because of my mother’s wounds, my father wounds. It was the transference of spirits that have accumulated from them. It was the emulation of their bad characteristics. And when I realized that this doesn’t have to be me, I don’t have to act like them or talk like them or be like them.

6. Awareness + Acknowledgment

Features: This is where the unlearning pattern changes. And this is where you break the cycle of generational curses that you’re not going to do what they do. And at least you’re aware now. And that is why that’s where healing starts. Awareness. When you’re when you’re aware that you need to change a bad habit and you’re not going to copy your mom or your dad’s temperament or you’re not going to copy their behavior, then that’s where healing starts.

Why Buy: And that’s why acknowledgement, confession, being able to deal with your trauma and triggers and being able to do the hard stuff. That is where transformation will start. That’s where people are not going to wait around for you to really wake up because no one can do it for you. No one can make you heal. No one can make you journal. No one can make you contemplate. You have to do the hard stuff. That’s why Jesus always like to say you have to go out in the mountaintop and be yourself.

Be in one with the father. I think when we are not aware of this, this is not just a new age version. I think this is from the Bible when Jesus said, “I am the one, me and the father are one.” If you need to integrate yourself with the father, you are going to be transcendent. If you need to integrate yourself to a higher level, you need to go outside of the world system and you need to really sit and lamentations. It says that it is good that one should hope and wait quietly. Let him sit alone and keep silent because when you want to heal, you need to be silent. You need to contemplate. You need to think about what have you been through in this life? And you need to really understand where does this come from? Why am I feeling like this? Where did this trauma come from? It all comes down to self-reflection. It all comes down to knowing your own demons and your triggers. And that is why I want you and I to heal. And I want you to understand that it will take time to heal. But the sooner you’ll take care of.
